Grand Total Donated So Far:
This year, the chosen Ladies Circle Presidential Charity, which we are proudly supporting is LUPUS UK.
Lupus is an incurable disease of the immune system, a condition in which the body’s defence mechanism begins to attack itself through an excess of antibodies in the blood stream causing inflammation and damage to the joints, muscles and other organs.
The disease can mimic various other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis. The cause is not known although there is some evidence implicating heredity, hormones and infection. There are thought to be 50,000 sufferers in the UK and 90% of these are women although men and children can be affected. Lupus can affect major organs, i.e. heart, lungs, kidneys and the brain and in some cases this can be fatal.
LUPUS UK is the only national registered charity supporting people with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and assisting those approaching diagnosis. They presently have over 5,000 members and Regional Groups who arrange medical talks, publish local newsletters, set up social occasions and organise fundraising events.
LUPUS UK also produces an informative national magazine with lupus articles, letters, reports and photographs, and operates a strong Grants Programme for Research purposes and Welfare. Their Welfare programme is to support those people seeking items of equipment, i.e. wheelchairs, stairlifts, Tens machines etc. in fact they are open to supporting anything that will enhance the quality of their life.
